Hey Friends! I'm happy to announce that we have not 1, but 2 upcoming dates at Gateway College's FabLab! Save the dates and start planning. Registration is not up yet, but I will post HERE as soon as they are.

May 23rd

1pm - 4pm (before the RAHS book sale you don't want to miss)

Gateway College's iMet Center 2320 Renaissance Blvd.

$15/student (12 spots)

Middle School+

We'll work in small teams to design and 3D print a projectile to be launched from a small catapult. The object is to hit as many balloons with your projectile as possible. Winning team will have a small prize.

Teams will be formed when students arrive.

June 16th

10am - 5pm (Bring a sack lunch!!!)

Gateway College's iMet Center 2320 Renaissance Blvd.

$30/student (don't know the cap yet)

Middle School+

Maker Day!!! The 1st half of the day will have a project to work on. We'll break for lunch & then have some free time to create in the lab using 3D printers, laser cutters, or the CNC router. Maybe a good time to scope Pinterest for ideas...just saying.

*** For 3D Printing, PLEASE have your child come familiar with TinkerCad & with ideas on what they want to do. Thingiverse.com is a great site to check out together. You can even have their idea saved to a thumb drive and bring it. 3D printing takes time & our time at the lab goes quickly. Coming with an idea will help them get the most out of the time.

*** Please plan to pick up some projects at the lab later. Some 3D prints can take multiple hours or even a couple days to print.

*** If your child would like to use the laser or the CNC Router during maker day, please have them familiar with Vectr. Again, having an idea already in mind will help them get the most out of their time.

*** As always, please keep in mind that we're being welcomed at a college campus. All of our kids have been great. It's just not the place to bounce around the room. It IS the place to raise your hand and ask questions if you need help. Our instructors are happy to help, but sometimes our kids aren't use to having to ask someone other than us.

*** Age can absolutely be flexible if it's otherwise a good fit. Notice I didn't put a cap on age either! If there's a mom or dad who'd love to join the session, you're welcome register as well.

*** I'll be offering these sessions to you 1st, once I have registration links. Please sign up as soon as you can because I'll offer remaining spots to friends outside RAHS after a while.

Maker Day on June 16th already has 7 to 9 spots spoken for based on word of mouth. It will be a great day getting to play with machines & make cool things! My desire is that everyone comes away with some cool things they learned how to make. There will be time spent teaching, specifically on the cnc router because that's what they're using to make the simple piece of furniture. But please be thinking about what you want to do with the open lab portion of the day. If you've never been to the FabLab, you might not know where to start & that's okay. Spending some time looking up ideas on Thingiverse or Pinterest can help. Spending time becoming familiar with the programs mentioned above will help your time flow more smoothly. * 3D printing is far from instantaneous. Your prints can take hours & that's okay. That's what we're paying for. However, it may require picking up your print at a later date if it's not done by the time you leave. That's common. There's always a desk full of prints waiting to be picked up.
