MS/HS Class Ideas... Interested???

I saw Jackie's post about classes for the fall. I also do better when I get my mind thinking NOW rather than in the fall. I have two class ideas - both of which I am happy to teach. However, I am also open to others jumping in if they have greater knowledge or experience. AND I would like to know the interest levels of different families.

POKEMON - Middle School focus

Kids can play the card game and trade cards. I would love for their to be some structure too. We have found a way to create our own cards on a website. We could write Pokemon skits, do some Poke-math, or ?? Any other ideas? :)

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP - Middle School to High School

Common Sense Media has an entirely FREE program that covers ALL THINGS digital and online. It 100% needs to be previewed before being taught. And there IS A LOT to cover by each grade level! So is this where I would really need input! Are families interested in a class that covers these serious topics at enrichment? If so, how many kids and which grades?

Here are my thoughts... we could do classes by age and/or gender. Girls High School is one class. Boys High School is another. MS girls is one. MS boys is another. I can't teach all of these though, so we'd need other teachers OR we could do them by semester. HS one semester, MS the next. Very open to ideas.

As an example of topics, here is what is covered in the 8th grade level: (Check out other levels here)

MEDIA BALANCE & WELL-BEING

Digital Media and Your Brain

How does digital media try to hook you, and what can you do about it?

PRIVACY & SECURITY

Being Aware of What You Share

How can you protect your privacy when you're online?

DIGITAL FOOTPRINT & IDENTITY

Social Media and Digital Footprints: Our Responsibilities

How does using social media affect our digital footprints?

RELATIONSHIPS & COMMUNICATION

Sexting and Relationships

What are the risks and potential consequences of sexting?

CYBERBULLYING, DIGITAL DRAMA & HATE SPEECH

Responding to Online Hate Speech

How should you respond to online hate speech?

NEWS & MEDIA LITERACY

This Just In!

How should we react to breaking news?

Common Sense Media is not a Christian organization, so our worldview as teachers and parents would need to be brought into this class. As such, I am very open to any other programs we could utilize. Otherwise previewing, prepping, praying, and bringing in our faith and values will be top prioritiy.

OK - so I would appreciate feedback. Good class idea? Or something most will want to cover at home?

We would be interested in the digital media class, and Noah would love the Pokémon class!
